Training Options

Australian Apprenticeships now offer tremendous flexibility for businesses. Employers can choose from a wider variety of on and off-the-job training options.

User Choice Policy

User Choice is a national policy designed to increase the responsiveness of the training system. Previously, the provision of nationally recognised training and qualifications was mostly limited to the state TAFE colleges.

Under the new system non-government organisations can register to provide nationally recognised training and qualifications, funding is available for these non-government registered training organisations. As a result you, together with your apprentice / trainee, can select a public or private training provider that best suits your needs.

You can also negotiate aspects of the training such as:

  • The structure and content of the training
  • Where the training will be delivered
  • How it will be delivered
  • When the training will occur
  • Which trainer / facilitator will conduct the assessment of training.

Choosing a Training Provider

There are around 5,000 Training Provider in Australia. All differ in terms of their products and services and the training courses they provide. When choosing a Training Provider it is best to consider:

  • Has worked with similar businesses in your industry
  • Is able to base its teaching on your procedures or equipment
  • Can provide services when and where you want them
  • Offer training and services which are good value for money
  • Can provide you and your staff with ongoing support.

You should also check whether the Training Provider is registered to deliver the training you need. This is your guarantee that the training has met quality standards and is nationally recognised. Most training providers will give you the option of training at:

  • Your workplace
  • The Training Provider's premises
  • Or a combination of both
