Nundah youth in positive space

PRESSURE RELEASE: BRISBANE'S YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES ARE ABOUT TO GET SOME RELIEF

A HEADSPACE centre to help young people deal with mental disorders is planned for Nundah.

The centre will deliver youth services, including mental health care, and counselling in alcohol and drug use, general and sexual health and education and employment.

Member for Lilley Wayne Swan said the Headspace service would address the lack of youth specific mental health services in the area.

"Brisbane has the fastest population growth in Queensland which has put pressure on the city's existing mental health services," he said.

"This new Headspace service here at Nundah will help to ease this pressure." Headspace chief executive Chris Tanti said Headspace's existing 30 centres had made a positive difference to more than 40,000 young people.

Mr Tanti said Aftercare was selected as the lead agency for the new centre, after providing community health services for more than 100 years.

Aftercare is joined by GPpartners, Brisbane Youth Service, Sarina Russo Job Access, and Queensland Health as consortium members for the centre.

Aftercare chief executive John Malone said 75 per cent of mental health issues emerged between the ages of 12 and 25 and it was "critical" young people had access to tailored services.

North Brisbane's GPpartners chair Dr Anita Green said the announcement was "excellent news", with only one in four people currently getting help for mental health problems.
