RECRUITMENT agencies are noticing it is people with certificates and other qualifications who are the first in line to land a job.
Sarina Russo Job Access Gold Coast business manager Judi McConville said the time when people could walk into a job without a piece of paper was almost at an end.
"Often what job seekers are finding is they can't walk from one job to another, or from one industry to another, without needing to upgrade or formalising their skills," she said.
"Employers are asking for training, particularly in office work as well as across other industries.
"We have also noticed a reduction in unskilled positions including construction where there are fewer labouring roles that do not need a licence or a ticket."
Ms McConville said although the demand for work was high, there were new prospects in construction and especially civil construction on the Coast.
"There are opportunities such as at the University Hospital and the Pacific Highway upgrade - there are lots of the big projects on the go," she said.
Ms McConville said there were more jobs in retail, hospitality and factory-based businesses, such as food processing.
